SHERINGHAM: FISHERMEN’S BEACH

A colourful view of the Fishermen’s Beach, during later years. Another Salmon Cameracolour Series postcard, this was posted from Sheringham to an address in Sheffield, and date stamped ‘11am, 25 August 1964’ – which was a Monday!

Crab boats are lined up on the flint pebbles, whilst one is returning from sea – not with a catch of crabs, but a boatload of holidaymakers it appears!

On the promenade, next to the bridge, can be seen a bright-red object – a Second World War mine (hope fully defused!) – used to collect contributions for the RNLI.

The cottage on the end of the row, seen in a previous postcard, has had a gable end added but otherwise looks the same. The coastguard’s gale-warning mast seems to have disappeared now.

The postcard sender had this to say about their holiday and the house they were staying in:

‘We are having a nice time here. On this postcard you can see our house (the big grey one)!’

Perhaps they were persuaded by Sheringham’s charms to return year in, year out, or maybe even settle there. Who knows?
