The entry for Sheringham in the 1936/37 edition of Cromer, Norwich & District, published by Ward Lock & Co, states: Only a few years ago a mere cluster of Fishermens cottages, the quick rise of Sheringham to fame as a seaside resort is a testimony to the attractions of its surroundings. From this view of the sea side of the town, taken in 1903, we are left in no doubt as to its beauty, nor its popularity if all the bell-tents are anything to go by! The sender of the postcard had this to say: Do you wonder that Father mistook this for a Soldiers encampment at dusk! Indeed not! In the middle distance, on the right, is the Grand Hotel (now demolished and replaced by exclusive apartments looking out over the sea), whilst behind it and to its left are the Beeston Hills two of them! Whilst Beeston Bump still remains to this day although much eroded by time and tide the smaller hill on its left has long since disappeared. Football and cricket used to be played between the two hills, it has been said! COPYRIGHT © ALBIES TALES 2010 |
