CHRISTMAS
GREETINGS FROM
EAST RUNTON...
...WITH
A LITTLE HELP FROM THE BOY COLIN
A
few months ago, I received an email from Mike Ashwell, the
proprietor of Seaview Caravan Park, Beach Road, East Runton,
who told me he was producing a Christmas card incorporating
a view of the village.

He
went on to say hed like to include a good old
Norfolk greeting inside and did I know of anyone at
FOND who could help him out... ...so I forwarded Mikes
request on to The
Boy Colin!
After all, he should know a thing or two about festive greetings,
shouldnt he?
Ho
ho ho, tergather!
As
usual The Boy Colin rose to the occasion and was
pleased to supply the following verse, which now graces the
inside of the card:
Yewre
got yar tarkey,
Pudden an Christmas fare,
The things yew need this toime a yare.
Cock Robin set in a Hulver tree,
Atwitterin loike mad,
Hes wishin yew a happy toime,
The best yewre ever had.
RUNTON
CARD SELLING FAST!
Mike
Ashwell kindly sent me a copy of his Christmas card (shown
above), so I emailed him back to see how it was selling and
for further details so as to include it in the winter Mawkin
and on this website, and this was his reply:
The
initial response to the card has been tremendous. I had been
to London for the weekend and when I arrived back in the village
I called at our local shop where the cards first went on sale.
The owner told me that they sold out in no time at all. I
think the combination of the village picture and a proper
Norfolk verse won people over.
There
had been many debates about the Hulver Tree and
just what it is. I had done my research on the web and found
that it is a Holly tree, so was able to answer the question.
The cards are priced at £1.50 each and the
whole amount is divided between a planned childrens
play area in East Runton that will receive £1 per card
sold and the remaining 50p per card will go to The RNLI Lifeguard
Service on East Runton beach.
The play area needs to raise over £20,000 to be
able to be built. As we have not been able to raise any grants
from such places as the Lottery Fund the villagers need to
raise the money themselves. If all the Christmas cards are
sold it will receive nearly £900.
The RNLI Lifeguard Service on East Runton beach was
operated for the first time this year and has proved to be
a great success. Due to council cutbacks the district council
(who normally fund such services) would only offer half of
the £9,400 needed to pay for the lifeguards. Local busineses
and the parish council raised most of the remaining half,
although there is still a slight shortfall. So if all the
cards sell nearly £450 will help to pay for the service.
