WHO ARE WE?
The Friends of Norfolk Dialect
A group formed in 1999 to conserve and record Norfolk's priceless linguistic and cultural heritage.
WHAT DO WE WANT?
To record as many as possible of our county's traditional words, sayings,
stories and songs.
To campaign for the recognition and teaching of "Norfolk" as an authentic
English regional dialect and to assist film and TV Producers to achieve
the correct accent in drama productions set in Norfolk.
To exchange ideas and information by any means we can employ, including
the Internet and information packs for schools.
To seek the help of other organisations and experts in building up an
archive in literature and sound, organise social and fund raising events
in all parts of the county, and publish a regular
newsletter.
WHAT HAVE WE DONE?
The formation of FOND has proved popular with Norfolk people. In our first
year we recruited 200 members, not only Norfolk residents but also "exiles"
living in other parts of Britain and overseas.
Our president is Norfolkman Peter trudgill,Professor of English Linguistics
at the University of Fribourg,Switzerland, and some of Norfolk's leading
citizens are coming on board as vice-presidents.
We have organised several "FOND Dews" and raised more than £1000
through membership subscriptions, donations and social functions.
We are now buying recording equipment which we shall use around the county
to compile a sound archive which, with the help of Norfolk County Archivist
Dr.John Alban, will eventually be housed at the Norfolk Records Office.
