Flint and thatch... sparkling rivers and broads, rolling fields and meadows, Norfolk is far from flat... popular seaside resorts and harbours - and rich in local colour and dialect.

BROAD NORFOLK DESIGNS
Three years ago, while idly watching a ladybird on the windowsill, scientist Lucy Catto came up with the idea for a clothing and gift company based on the Norfolk dialect.

Motherhood and a move back to her home county of Norfolk prompted her to take the plunge and set up Broad Norfolk Designs. Her designs celebrate some of the unique, quirky and downright bizarre words that have existed in our local dialect for hundreds of years, with her flagship designs based on the most endearing Norfolk word, Bishy barney bee, otherwise known as a ladybird.

Lucy told us: “I’ve been a member of FOND for a number of years and wholeheartedly support their aims of preserving our linguistic heritage. Our rich local dialect is something to be celebrated.

“While living overseas a few years ago someone sent me Peter Trudgill’s book The Norfolk Dialect to stop me feeling homesick. This excellent book taught me more about the history of our city and county than I ever learnt at school!

“The more I’ve learnt about the origin and evolution of our local dialect the more fascinating I find it.”

Given the Norfolk theme of her business, Lucy is keen to support our local economy – all of the design artwork is produced in house and is then brought to life on clothing and ceramics by local companies.

“Setting up a business during a recession has been far from easy,” she said, “but the feedback I’ve had from customers at craft fairs has motivated me and confirmed that there are lots of people out there who are fond (excuse the pun!) and proud of our local dialect.”

The range of clothing, mugs and plates make perfect gifts for anyone who has a fondness for our fine county.

Many of Lucy’s products have gone overseas to expats as far afield as New Zealand and Australia, to provide them with a small reminder of home.

Broad Norfolk Designs is based in Hethersett, Norfolk, and operates mainly via its online shop but Lucy’s products are also for sale at The Jade Tree on Elm Hill in Norwich and at Church Farm Shop, Norwich Road, Hethersett.
